Fencing Over 40
Fencing is fascinating and captivating for all age groups. It is truly a life-long sport, as is evidenced by these competitive fencers who are keen to travel the world to test their skills, keep fit into their senior years, connect with old and new friends and to just have a blast with the sport they love.
A fencing bout is primarily a duel of intellect. Regular fencing classes make it possible to postpone the onset of effect of old age. It is a wonderful means of preserving mobility of the joints, flexibility of the body, sharpness of the mind, and a healthy spirit. Fencing has many health and fitness benefits for all ages. It increases endurance,
balance, co-ordination and flexibility. It also satisfies the competitive instincts.
Some fence for fun in clubs and others enter the many veterans only competitions. Competitive veteran fencing is an option not only for former fencers, but also for those without previous experience of fencing. Veteran
fencing competitions are held in age groups: 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80 plus. There are fencers on the circuit who are into their 90s!
Both NSW Fencing and the AFF run Veterans' competitions. Other events that may be of interest to veteran fencers include the World Veterans' Championships, the Commonwealth Veterans' Championships, the Oceania Veterans' Championships and various competitions in Asia, Europe and USA.
“Why do people join the veterans fencing organizations? Everyone remarks on the spirit and the atmosphere at the competitions. This comes from our having a common love of fencing and interest in the skill of the sport.
Veterans have usually given up the regular competitive circuit but the fencing brain is still there and is as sharp as ever.” Henry de Silva, Chairman European Veterans Fencing (1991 - 2007).
The motto of the USA Fencing Veterans is "We have fun...but we keep score."
